How Should Qurbani Meat Be Shared

How Should Qurbani Meat Be Shared?

Dhul Hijjah has begun, many are preparing for Qurbani. One common question is: how do we divide the meat?

What the Quran Says:

“So eat from it and feed the poor and needy.” (Al-Hajj: 28, 36)

Islam encourages us to eat from the sacrifice and share it with those in need.

Recommended Way to Divide Qurbani:

  • One-third for you and your family
  • One-third as a gift
  • One-third for the poor

There’s flexibility—what matters most is giving with sincerity.

Honoring the Sunnah, Sharing the Blessing

Different Opinions from Scholars:

  • Hanafis and Hanbalis: Prefer the 1/3 rule, but giving more to the poor is encouraged.
  • Shafi’is: Give most to the poor.
  • Malikis: No set rule—give and eat as you wish.

Deadline for Distribution:

Sacrifice must happen by sunset on the 13th of Dhul Hijjah, but meat can be distributed after Eid if needed.
